Lock IT Down: Crack or reset lost administrator passwords with these tools

The bane of an IT professional's life is when administrator passwords are lost, stolen, or simply forgotten. For the unprepared, losing an admin password can cause extensive disruption to work flow and even business processes—not to mention the fact that it could be a potentially serious security problem. With that in mind, I'm going to explain the various approaches that can be taken when faced with this problem. Words of warning The methods described below are to be carried out at the administrator's risk. The products described below will often work on both Windows NT and Windows 2000, but you should read the product documentation to make sure the product will work in your environment. Preventative maintenance First, if you have not instituted the following basic policies for administrator password protection, then you should do so as soon as possible. The administrator account should be renamed to something obscure. No one in the IT department should be using...

Network Basics: The Seven Layers of the OSI Reference Model

OSI sounds like the name of a top-secret government agency you hear about only in Tom Clancy novels. What it really stands for in the networking world is Open Systems Interconnection, as in the Open Systems Interconnection Reference Model, affectionately known as the OSI model. The OSI model breaks the various aspects of a computer network into seven distinct layers. These layers are kind of like the layers of an onion: Each successive layer envelops the layer beneath it, hiding its details from the levels above. The OSI model is also like an onion in that if you start to peel it apart to have a look inside, you’re bound to shed a few tears. The OSI model is not a networking standard in the same sense that Ethernet and TCP/IP are networking standards. Rather, the OSI model is a framework into which the various networking standards can fit. The OSI model specifies what aspects of a network’s operation can be addressed by various network standards. So, in a sense, the OSI model is s...

what is Wi-Fi KB4515384

It's becoming clear that Microsoft is having a quality control problem when it comes to updating Windows 10. On September 10, the software giant began the rollout of update KB4515384 for devices running the May 2019 Update (version 1903), and shortly after the release a number of users started reporting problems with the Start menu and search, followed by audio issues with certain games, and now, it appears that the update has a bug affecting network connectivity. According to several reports on Reddit and Microsoft forums (via Neowin), after installing update KB4515384 on Windows 10, some wireless network adapters will stop working, and reinstalling the latest device driver doesn't fix the problem. Microsoft seems to have already acknowledged the issue and explains that the compatibility bug is happening with Intel Centrino 6205/6235 and Broadcom 802.11ac Wi-Fi adapters on specific models of NEC devices. for more information :  microsoft lan

How to disable SmartScreen in Windows 10 Creators Update

Windows 10 Creators Update introduced a number of changes to the user interface, so disabling Smart Screen can be a bit confusing. In this article, we'll see how to properly disable SmartScreen in it. The SmartScreen filter is a technology which was initially designed for Internet Explorer to protect users from malicious websites and web applications. It was integrated with IE8 and IE9 (as the successor to IE7's Phishing filter). Starting with Windows 8, Microsoft implemented Internet Explorer's SmartScreen feature directly into the operating system so files are screened for being potentially harmful. SmartScreen is also integrated for Windows Store apps. If enabled, the Windows SmartScreen filter sends information about every application you download and run to Microsoft’s servers, where that information will be analyzed and compared with their malicious apps database. If Windows gets a negative feedback about the app from the server, it will prevent you from running ...

How to Test LAN Speed

It's often useful to test the speed of your local area network to ensure you're getting the amount of bandwidth that you need for various tasks. A LAN speed test can be useful in conjunction with an internet throughput test measuring how fast you can upload and download content from the internet at large or on its own to see how fast you can transfer files and data on your local network. You can find a variety of free apps to test the speed on your LAN. Internet and LAN Speed Test A local area network is a set of computers and other devices like smart phones and printers connected within a relatively small space, such as an office, a university or a home. A LAN can include devices connected wirelessly, ones connected by wired connections or a mix of the two. Today, many LANs are also connected to the internet, and some are primarily set up simply to send local traffic to the world at large. But it's often also useful to send data between computers on a LAN, whether yo...
